Why Do I Need to Sleep?
Have you ever wondered why God created us such that we need to sleep? If hard work is so important and time is so precious because Jesus is coming soon, why do we still waste time on sleeping? Ever wondered why? : )
I've never questioned why I need to sleep, because it's just something so natural to me, as i believe it's for all you as well. But because I've been so deprived of sleep recently and woken rudely by a crying baby when I'm most deeply asleep, I begun to have this question in my mind. Why does God want to create human beings who will get tired and need to rest & sleep? Why can't we be alert 24 hours a day? I am sure we can get lots more things done for God!
Today I read an article which was very interesting. The writer talked about the reason why God programmed this need for us to have a time to sleep after a day of hard work. Besides reminding us that we are people with limitations and that we need to rest in order to recharge after working hard, the time of sleeping is also the time for dreaming.
Scientifically this is proven. If a person doesn't sleep for a prolonged period of time, he or she will go into a state of dreaminess or subconsciousness or even hallucination. This is because he or she has not been sleeping to allow the dreams to happen.
This dreaming is of course more than just having meaningless dreams when we sleep. From the spiritual angle, we dream big dreams for God when we are in a state of rest. There is a time to work and there is a time to rest. When we are resting and in a state of recharging and drawing from God, that's when we start to weave our dreams. But there MUST come a time when we put this dream into action and go into a full work mode.
Of course I am not advocating that we should take periods of break often so that we can dream big dreams for God. Yet, it is true that we must always allow ourselves a period when we can wind down and dream dreams, after a period when we have worked very hard for the kingdom. Something we just got to guard ourselves is not to treat the dreams that we dreamt during the period of rest as 'nothing much' or 'just another dream that will never come through'.
Dreaming big dreams for God and working towards it is deeply fulfilling. Although there are bound to be lots and lots of restrictions and obstructions in the way, overcoming each & every one of them is God's way of making us better people for Him.
Let's dream big dreams today and work hard towards seeing it come to pass in our lives in this lifetime! :)
