A Positive Nature
If you ask me whether optimism is a personality, I would say not. Because I feel it's a choice.
Nobody can be born with a pessimistic personality because what God put inside of us when He created us was a spirit of positiveness - one that is optimistic about life and enthusiastic about living a God-driven life.
But we're all living in a broken-down world. That is why we've all been polluted in our mind such that negativity now takes a firm hold in many of our minds. It has become so much a part of our lives that we even say to ourselves, "I am born like that.. I've always been a rather pessimistic person... I always expect the worst case scenario...". We have rationalised negativity or pessimism as a natural part of life. But I personally do not think this is biblical or even logical.
Imagine you're the monopoly creator of toys and you're in the midst of creating really wonderful-looking toys, the best in the world. They're so exquisite that even you are amazed at the creation of your hands. You're beaming with joy because you know you have given life to a generation of toys that will take the market by storm. It will bring laughter to those who own them. It will be a companion to the lonely kids. It will brighten up a kid's room with its colours and shine. When you are painting the faces of your toys, would you paint a :) or a :( ?
When God created the world, I believe He was filled with joy and happiness because He liked with He created. So when He created man, He also breathed into man a breath of life that was filled with joy and hope. Man are created with this nature of positivity, not negativity. So what rationale is there to say that some of us are born pessimistic? We can only say we became like that through life.
So you see.. if we are supposed to be positive people filled with hope in life, we should be happy every single day, living a life that God has prepared for us. It is a choice to be happy and contented in life. It is a choice we have to make every morning, living in this world that is not perfect, and living among imperfect people. (and that includes the one you see in the mirror everyday.)
If we convince ourselves that we are just born pessimistic, then we are living in a lie that the devil has subtly put into our minds. Rationalising something that is not of God into sounding that it's bad but not that bad is dangerous. It's dangerous because everytime negative thoughts pop up in our minds, we will just console ourselves that 'it's OK, I am born pessimistic, that's why.. it's nothing serious.' and what happens? The negative thoughts will slowly eat into our mind, our heart and finally consume our whole being. For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
Much on the contrary, we are to be happy and joyful people, full of hope & anticipation of what is to come. It is amazing how contagious happiness is. When one is happy and laughing, he will soon attract another person to laugh along with him. And when one is optimistic, he will influence another person to think positively like him. Optimism attracts the best scenario to happen. It sets the stage for God to move powerfully and creates an atmosphere of faith where good things are expected to happen all the time. Don't you want that??
So why do you want to choose to be pessimistic? Be optismistic and positive and you will see a new freshness in your life today! Because that is in the will of God right from the beginning. :)
