I am the greatest?
Recently I had contact with several people who seemed to think the world revolves around only 1 person - themselves. Frankly speaking, people full of themselves turn me off. There is a distinct difference between someone who is always sharing about his or her life and in the process impart something of value & significance, and someone who only talks & cares about himself all the time.
Bro Khen Theen is one leader who will always share about what he is doing in his school and his cell group, and tells us what breakthroughs he had. He would share secret weapons about what works in a cell group, what fun game to play with the members and what to do to increase the cohesiveness of a group. Everytime he shares, he imparts faith and brings excitement, especially to the rest of the CGLs. You feel like you have learnt something and feel excited about implementing the same thing in your CG because it sounded so fun & interesting. This kind of sharing is perfectly OK.
Yet, there is another kind of 'sharing' which makes you feel that all the person cares about is himself or herself. Even though the person may be lamenting about how miserable his or her life is.
You know how it is.. when someone in the group says 'I really had a bad day at work.. my boss seems to be picking on me...' Instead of comforting the person and saying something nice & encouraging, the 'I-am-the-greatest' person would go 'Your boss cannot be AS BAD AS MINE. You should see how he goes about criticising everyone he sees.'
Come on lah.. how interested would one miserable person be in another man's misery??
It's something that's always happening, but it goes to show the heart of that person. All he cares about is himself. Even though a friend is sharing his misery & hoping to get some encouragement, this person goes about trying to 'win' the battle of 'who's more miserable?'
Didn't Pst Kong mention this recently in one of his sermons?? There are just some people who are always fighting to be the MOST MISERABLE ONE. Because they seem to think that they have power in their hands when they are THE MOST MISERABLE ONE.
We cannot be people who are always only concerned about our own well being, our own benefits, our own comfort. If we are like that,we will never be able to command the respect of anyone. We would never be able to get real friends for life. We would never experience true love.
So, ultimately it's still a pride issue. Our heart is so full of ourselves that we cannot contain something or someone else. We are so preoccupied that we forgot that we are only but one small being in this gigantic limitless universe.
Oh God, help us! Eliminate pride!!!!

sometimes, people who often talk about themselves, or should i say, people who often try to steer the spotlight to themselves, many a times, they don't do it intentionally. Perhaps they just want to share and contribute. Perhaps they just want to ventilate?
To me, you can talk about yourself all day without being prideful. WHY?? Cause being pride is an attitude. Pride is also a spirt as well. A person who acts in a very religious and righteous way can be seen as pious, yet the truth of the matter is he sees himself as "better than THOU" - PRIDE.
