Leaving Behind A Legacy

A very sad & traumatic thing happened in the family in the past week. Isaiah's uncle, who is also the first pastor I had as a Christian passed away in Australia. It was sad because everything happened so suddenly. Nobody expected anything. Nobody knew it was coming.

Within 24 hours, we lost a dear uncle and wonderful pastor and preacher. Knowing that he is now in heaven in the arms of Jesus was somewhat comforting. Still, it did nothing to lessen the pain and the trauma.

Uncle Teo was the pastor of my alma mater church. He was the first pastor who taught me who Jesus is. His sermons were always interesting and humourous, yet strong in the Word of God. He is a great man of God who loves his family and his church.

Life is fragile. We have been saying this sentence over & over again in the past few days. We really never know whether we would still be alive on this earth in the next minute. Our life does not lie in our own hands, and we cannot decide when is a convenient time to leave and return to God's embrace.

Yet, there is a legacy that we can leave behind. And I feel that Uncle Teo did leave behind a wonderful legacy for his children.

He imparted his love and passion for God to his 3 children. It is evident how much they love God. The few times I got to talk to them made me feel that young as they may be, they know who Jesus is in a tangible way. Their father has been a great example in their lives and showed them in a realistic way how real Jesus is.

And that is so so important.

It is true that we bring nothing to this world, and when we leave, we can take nothing with us. Yet, when we finally leave this world, apart from knowing that we have done all that God has called us to do, are we able to tell ourselves too, that we have left behind something that is of utmost value? Something that can continue to shine brightly even when we are gone? Something that will always be remembered for generations to come?

Even as we are still living on this earth, start thinking about what kind of legacy you want to leave behind. And the kind of legacy that you can leave behind is determined by the kind of life you are living now. How are you living your life this very minute?
